Wonky stars..

Well I finally got a few minutes to sew - I've been wanting to try these wonky star blocks that I saw here and here.  So after dinner I snuck up stairs to sew for a few minutes.  Of course when you only have a few minutes things never go quite as planned - it's Murphy's law.

I cut 4 1/2" squares -
8 squares of the back ground fabric
4 squares for the stars and
 1 square for the center

cut the squares for the stars in half diagonally

So then it was time to sew and I was like wait - I don't need to match up the edges and worry about things matching up - this was a liberating experience - I mean for all these years I've cut perfect shares, triangles and sewed them all to have perfect corners, etc.  This was new and exciting for me!  You've gotta try it if you haven't already.

Then I trimmed off the corner.

Then I ironed

Then I sewed the other triangle on.  Do you see my goof???
I did it on all 4 squares!! LOL

Then I trimmed the extra off and ironed.

Then I squared them up to 4 1/2 inch squares.

Then sewed two star points onto the center square.

Then sewed a background  square to each side of the star points.

Yeah - finished super simple and I love the outcome!!!

Gotta go sew a few more before bedtime!

Thank you Silly BooDilly and Oh, Fransson for the great tutorial!

B r r r r r r r r r r.......

We've had such a mild spring here in New England I think we have been spoiled by the warmer temperature, today I woke up to snow with temperatures in the 30's.   Last week it was in the high 70's.  Gotta love New England!  Great day to cuddle up by the fire with a quilt and read a book!  But that is not the case in my world, off to work I went!  One can only dream..  Now I'm home typing this by the fire with a dog snoring at my feet.

While I was browsing on Pinterest I came across this beautiful quilt at Fluffy Sheet Quilting - check it out!

Been a busy week, dealing with tweens, the internet and texting.  It's tough being a parent these days!  My girls are good girls but you never know, they're curious at this age.  I found out about this website called Omegle where you can either text or video chat with random strangers. Girls seems to think it's funny to see if they can get guys to say inappropriate things to them.  Boys are asking for girls to send them photos of them half dressed.  I believe we've exposed our children to too much information that they are not maturing enough to handle. Kids are curious at this age, 13, and don't really understand the dangers out there.  So we have taken a week off from the internet and texting.  It has been nice to have them hang out with us and chat!  So now we'll be texting/internet free everyday from 5-7 and the internet gets shut off every night at 10pm.

Haven't got any sewing done this week -planning on sewing a couple of skirts soon.  I've been working on making a cathedral block, always wanted to try this block.   I'll post photos later.

We're off to see The Hunger Games.

Have a wonderful day,

What a gorgeous day here in the Northeast!
This morning I took the dog for a walk through the woods, the snow is almost all gone, yeah!
Raked out a couple of gardens, had to stop when I got a few blister. - Poor me.
(Just Kidding - but it was a good excuse to sew - oh and do laundry, make dinner
and blueberry muffins
(recipe hereI replace a cup of flour w/ a cup of oatmeal and add 1/4 cup of milk.)

Finished sewing the blocks for the quilt I'm currently working on.

Laying out the blocks

Oops -need to make a few more blocks.

This is the layout for now- not sure I like it.
Might add some solid white borders around the individual squares.
What you think??

That's all folks,

The first cut is the deepest...

I love sketching up new ideas for quilts but I have the hardest time actually cutting into the fabric.  So many thoughts go through my head - what if I don't like it, what if it doesn't work with the other fabrics, what if ..............  Fabric is so expensive these days and I hate to waste any of it.

Anyone else have these thoughts?

So I have a Jelly roll and some half yards of fabric from Moda's line Chrysalis.

So here's what I'm thinking.

Pieces are cut.

Dark/medium blocks are done.

Busy day, made Banana chocolate chip Bread, recipe here (I eliminated the walnuts and added chocolate chips), took the dogs for a walk, did laundry and had a visit from my oldest daughter
(There's 20 years between my oldest and my twins!) and my granddaughter who turned 6 this past week.

Beautiful day here today, high 50's and the snow is almost gone.
Spring is in the air!

Spring is in the air..

We tried making maple syrup today for the first time, let me just say we need to boil it down more.  We have a watery liquid that has very little taste.  At least it was a nice day outside by the fire.

Kat - do I have to be outside?

                                                                             Sid having fun!

(Yes, these are my twins.)

The dogs and I had a great time on our walk through the woods.
These photos were taken last week during our biggest storm of the season.
Today it was 60 degrees outside....

Mojo and Zeva

After all that fun I decided to pick up my sewing room and came across some fabric my daughter had picked out a least a year ago for pillowcases.
So in a couple of hours, that includes interruptions, I completed two pillowcases.
You can find pattern ideas here.

Not quite as planned...

Well today didn't go quite as planned, it's my day off and I had planned on going jean shopping.  I dread buying new jeans, they're either too tight in the thighs or the waist or too large at the waist or whatever - no way am I wearing skinny jeans!  And I want real jeans - not light weight jeans - I need some regular jeans that hold it all in.

So I take my twin tween girls to school, I drop them off and Kat has forgotten her laptop.  Go back home get laptop - still in my PJ's and slippers - so quickly threw on yoga pants and sneakers - then drop laptop off - head home - cell phone rings - school nurse calling Sid is sick - turn around and picked up Sid - at least she made it home before she threw-up.

At least I got some sewing done, not sure I'm liking the new quilt - but I had to try something new and It might grow on me after I quilt it.

Maybe it's the universe way of telling me I need to stay home today!  Today would have been my dear friend Linda's 49th birthday.  I miss her - she was so funny- and she was one of those people that lived her life to the fullest.

Have a wonderful evening,

I'm not the only one...

I'm not the only one in the family that is creative, my husband plays around with wood.  He is currently building a cedar strip canoe.

He's also made this side table.

The oven is beeping - just finished making Pumpkin Bread.

March comes in like a lion...

March certainly came in like a lion, we got a foot of snow on Thursday the most snow we've had all winter in Maine.  Today it's raining - making for a slushy mess.  So I've been cleaning up my sewing room.

A couple of post ago I showed you my sewing room here's a few tips to help it be more usable space.  Love my design wall, would you like to create your own?

You'll need:

4' x 8'  sheet of 1" foam board insulation
Screws to mount the insulation to the wall
Spray Adhesive
2 pieces of 4' x 8" white felt
cotton batting

I mounted my insulation to the wall and then used the spray adhesive to attach the felt, then the batting and then felt again.  I wouldn't recommend doing it this way!  It made a mess and the smell was yucky!  If I was to do it again I would do it outside or in the garage and then mount the insulation to your wall after you have used the spray adhesive to attach the felt and batting.    Just saying lesson learned!

Side View

I used a peg board mounted to the wall to hang my rulers. (I need more hooks.)

My portable ironing board.

Stay tuned to see what I make with these Batiks.
